    Glaucoma em cães e gatos : revisão de literatura e estudo retrospectivo

    A síndrome glaucomatosa é caracterizada por lesão progressiva e irreversível do nervo óptico e degeneração de células ganglionares da retina, resultando em escavação da papila óptica e perda visual. O glaucoma acomete inúmeras espécies e está entre as principais causas de cegueira em cães, afetando 0,5% desta população. Em relação aos felinos, sua incidência é menor. Dentre os métodos de diagnóstico para o glaucoma estão a oftalmoscopia, gonioscopia e a tonometria de aplanação. A ultrassonografia e a eletrorretinografia também são exames utilizados. O principal objetivo da terapia do glaucoma é preservar a visão. Normalmente, o tratamento clínico proporciona alívio temporário, mas não controla a PIO a longo prazo, por isso recomenda-se, muitas vezes, a intervenção cirúrgica. A seleção do candidato dependerá de vários fatores e exames prévios devem ser realizados. Os procedimentos disponíveis são variáveis e são utilizados dependendo do estágio do glaucoma e do potencial visão do animal.The glaucomatous syndrome is characterized by progressive and irreversible damage of the optic nerve and degeneration of retinal ganglion cells, resulting in optic disc excavation and visual loss. The glaucoma affects numerous species, is among the main causes of blindness in the dog, affecting 0.5% of dogs. In relation to felines, their incidence is lower. They suspect animals with reddish eyes evaluating IOP. Among the diagnostic methods for glaucoma are ophthalmoscopy, gonioscopy and aplanation tonometry. Ultrasonography and an electroretinography are also used. The main purpose of glaucoma therapy is to preserve a vision. Usually, the clinical treatment provider of time, but does not control an IOP in the long term, so it is recommended surgical intervention. The selection of the candidate will depend on several factors, the previous examinations must be performed. The available procedures are variable and are used depending on the stage of glaucoma and potential vision of the animal

    Eyelid Apocrine Hidrocystomas in a Cat

    Background: Eyelid apocrine hidrocystoma (AH) is a benign cystic lesion originating from the glands of Moll. These eyelid lesions are rare in cats and there are few cases reported in the literature. The aetiopathogenesis of AH is unknown and the lesion has been interpreted either as proliferative adenomatous tumour or as retention cyst. Defnitive diagnosisrequires biopsy with microscopic examination. Treatment options for eyelid AH include surgical excision, drainage through aspiration, cryosurgery with liquid nitrogen and chemical ablation. The aim is to report a case of bilateral multiple AH of the eyelids in a cat that was successfully treated with surgical excision.Case: A 5-year-old male Himalayan cat was referred to the Ophthalmology Section in the Veterinary Clinics Hospital of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil with a history of pigmented masses in both eyes that had been progressively enlarging over a 1-year period. Ophthalmic examination revealed two cysts on themedial canthus at the eyelid margin in both eyes. In the left eye was observed mild blepharospasm and lacrimation. Cysts were soft, smooth, round and flled with a dark brownish pigment. The remainder of the ophthalmic examination was unremarkable. Surgical excision of the cysts was indicated with a safety margin. The surgical procedure was performedunder inhalation anaesthesia using an operating microscope. A V-shaped, full-thickness excision of the eyelid containing the cyst was performed. The eyelids were closed with two layers of sutures. No complications were noted during surgery. Microscopic examination revealed cystic dilatation of the sweat glands with a large amount of eosinophilic secretion. EyelidAH was diagnosed based on the results to confrm the diagnosis. The cat recovered and was discharged the following day. The postoperative treatment involved the administration of tramadol (2 mg/kg, PO, q 12 h) daily for 3 days. After surgery, the cat had no signs of ocular discomfort. After three years, no recurrence has been observed.Discussion: AH is a benign tumour derived from Moll’s glands. The exact aetiology of AH is unknown. A breed-specifc predisposition among Persian cats has been suggested. In the present case, the ophthalmic examination revealed periocular masses brownish to black, round, soft, and fluid-flled. Multiple pigmented nodules involving the skin of the lower eyelids were observed. In the current case, the cat was of the Himalayan breed and was 5 years old with multiple AH in both eyelids. In terms of clinical features, this case was similar to previous ones reporting eyelid AH in cats. Normally, a defnitive diagnosis is confrmed through histopathology after excisional biopsy. In the current case, diagnose was made on the basis of the clinical fndings, history, and results of histological examination. Treatment options for eyelid AH include surgical excision, aspiration, cryosurgery and chemical ablation with trichloroacetic acid. Surgical removal of the cysts was performed in the current case. Histopathologic examination revealed cystic dilatation of the sweat gland with large amount of eosinophilic secretion. The sutures were removed one week after surgery. Periodic evaluations were conducted and there were no signs of recurrence after three years.     Evaluation of the corneal epithelium of rabbits treated with preservative-free eye drops containing ketorolac tromethamine or diclofenac sodium

    Objetivou-se avaliar os efeitos do cetorolaco de trometamina a 0,5% e do diclofenaco de sódico a 0,1% sem conservantes na córnea de coelhos. Dezessete coelhos da raça Nova Zelândia foram aleatoriamente divididos em três grupos: o grupo de 0,5% de cetorolaco de trometamina, o grupo de 0,1% de diclofenaco sódico e o grupo controle (0,9% de NaCl). Para cada coelho, os dois olhos foram tratados três vezes ao dia durante 90 dias de acordo com o grupo de tratamento. Os epitélios da córnea foram analisados usando microscopia eletrônica de varredura para observar o número de células claras, cinzas e escuras, o número de criptas e a perda do formato celular hexagonal. Ambas as formulações administradas causaram alterações no epitélio da córnea de coelhos. Com exceção da contagem de criptas (p <0,05), todos os parâmetros apresentaram diferença estatisticamente significante entre os grupos. O número de células escuras foi maior no grupo cetorolaco de trometamina (p <0,05). O número de células cinzentas foi maior no grupo diclofenaco de sódio do que no grupo controle (p=0,003). O maior número de células escuras observado foi associado ao menor número de células claras (r=-0,577, p<0,001). A perda do formato celular mostrou uma correlação direta com o número de células escuras (r=0,524, p=0,002). O cetorolaco de trometamina 0,5% foi mais tóxico para o epitélio da córnea de coelhos do que o diclofenaco de sódio a 0,1%.This study aimed to evaluate the corneal epitheliotoxic effects of preservative-free ketorolac tromethamine 0.5% and diclofenac sodium 0.1% eye drops in rabbits. Seventeen New Zealand rabbits were randomly divided into three groups: the 0.5% ketorolac tromethamine group, the 0.1% diclofenac sodium group, and the control group (0.9% NaCl). For each rabbit, both eyes were treated three times daily according to their treatment group. The corneal epithelia were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy to observe the number of light, grey, and dark cells; the number of epithelial holes; and the loss of hexagonal shape. Both of the formulations administered caused changes in the healthy corneal epithelia of rabbits. Except for number of epithelial holes (p < 0.05), all the parameters showed a statistically significant difference between the groups. The number of dark cells was highest in the ketorolac tromethamine group (p<0.05). The number of grey cells was higher in the diclofenac sodium group than in the control group (p =0.003). A higher number of dark cells was associated with a smaller number of light cells (r =-0.577, p < 0.001). Loss of shape showed a direct correlation with the number of dark cells (r=0.524, p=0.002). Based on the results presented, it was possible to conclude that ketorolac tromethamine 0.5% was more toxic to rabbit corneal epithelium than diclofenac sodium 0.1%
